About the Position
We are looking for an inquisitive and tech-savvy Chemical/ Energy Engineer to join our team as we embark on the next phase of an exciting energy network innovation project, and enhance our general product. This role will play a crucial part in developing energy system relationships for energy transition projects based on sound engineering principles. As our Chemical/ Energy Engineer, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining a database of energy conversions and system requirements etc, to help transform complex data into actionable insights through our tools. You will work closely with our software developers, designer, project stakeholders and national policy-makers to design calculations that align with specific project requirements while advancing Olsights’ long-term product vision.
Role & Responsibilities
This role is intended to research and build a database of energy project performance metrics and requirements, and help build a suite of energy technology/ system models to feed our spatial planning tools and future cost/ economic estimation routines. The expected role & responsibilities can be summarised as:
- Researching technical engineering design features, maturity, trends, risks & opportunities for important energy transition technologies (such as renewables, waste -> energy, energy storage) – and including use cases for carbon capture, use & storage (CCUS) and hydrogen technologies;
- Researching project delivery metrics (such as costs, development schedules, consent requirements, contract models etc) for such clean energy project developments;
- Creating models for estimate equipment sizing/ energy output/ costs for such clean energy technologies across a range of scales (from domestic to large industrial) and environmental locations (onshore, offshore, global) in order to assess their suitability against alternative concepts;
- Helping to research and create models for system carbon emissions, lifecycle carbon intensity, lifecycle costs & economics, and marginal abatement cost curves (MACC);
- Helping to find the most efficient ways of working, through maximizing the use of existing/ open-source information, and through modern collaboration/ communication tools.

Skills & Experience
- The candidate must hold a good degree in chemical/ energy engineering or equivalent, with a demonstrated interest and academic study experience in clean/ low-carbon energy developments.
- A track record showing a willingness to work and learn at every opportunity is essential, and previous work experience with industrial engineering / technology would be highly regarded.
- Keen analytic skills are essential, and experience with database/ coding calculations is desirable.
- Must have the right to work in the UK.
A mix of analytical data / engineering modelling combined with practical judgement is preferred for this role. The ideal candidate would be quick to learn new skills, eager to keep learning more, and able to apply new learnings back into ongoing work.
