Mimica is seeking a chemical engineer with around two years of industrial experience, with some existing knowledge of gel chemistry. You will assist in the development and scale up of smart labels for food packaging, and be based in North-West UK. As part of a small but growing dynamic mission-focused company,, one of your priorities will be to help set up our pilotscale production line for supply of Bump Tags to our customers. About us
At Mimica, we’re developing an award-winning label, called Bump, that tells you exactly when food spoils, based on storage conditions. Our mission is to radically reduce unnecessary food waste caused by the current expiry date system. Recently, we launched our first product, the Bump Cap, and started selling our first production batches.

You
We’re looking for somebody passionate about sustainability, making a difference to food waste and who is looking for the level of responsibility that working at a startup can offer.

You should have:
- A BSc or MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, General Engineering, with some knowledge of chemistry (ideally including hydrogels).
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high quality, accurate work
- Self-motivated and able to work to given targets
- Good ability to follow written, verbal and visual instructions to specifications
- Strong time-management and organisational skills
- Good level of spoken and written English to be able to clearly communicate and report back to the product team
- Responsible attitude towards health & safety in the use of hazardous tools
- Commitment to improvement and working collaboratively with the team
- Any other reasonable tasks within the scope of this role
Your activities will include:
- Helping the Engineering Manager to set up and and commission the new UK pilot assembly line for Bump Caps and Tags, near to Wrexham
- Training with the Development Manager to be able to manufacture gel batches for production, and customer test samples
- Carrying out pilot lab studies with hydrocolloids
- Conduct on-going gel testing and perform statistical analysis on physical properties to ensure product specifications are met
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Presenting results in reports and presentations
- Exploring and researching iterations for the technology
- Running quality control checks on supplies, mid-process and finished product to meet precise tolerances
- Performing functional testing and recording results effectively
- Working with the product team to troubleshoot any problems or issues
Work hours
Our normal work hours are 8 hours per day starting between 8-10am, although work hours are flexible and we're happy to work around your schedule

Location
Our technical team are based in Wrexham. You will periodically also travel to London to visit the rest of the team.
