Mimica is seeking a chemical engineer with experience in hydrogel rheology and non-Newtonian fluid mechanics for the development of smart labels for food packaging in the North West. As a small but growing dynamic mission-focused company, this role involves working closely with the product team to develop new products and help to produce and fulfil pilot batches of our existing product while our mass-scale production line is being built. About us
At Mimica, we’re developing an award-winning label, called Bump, that tells you exactly when food spoils, based on storage conditions. Our mission is to radically reduce unnecessary food waste caused by the current expiry date system. Recently, we launched our first product, the Bump Cap, and started selling our first production batches.

You
We’re looking for somebody passionate about sustainability, making a difference to food waste and who is looking for the level of responsibility that working at a startup can offer.

You should have:
- A BSc or MSc degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or related discipline
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high quality, accurate work
- Self-motivated and able to work to given targets
- Good ability to follow written, verbal and visual instructions to specifications
- Strong time-management and organisational skills
- Good level of spoken and written English to be able to clearly communicate and report back to the product team
- Responsible attitude towards health & safety in the use of hazardous tools
- Commitment to improvement and working collaboratively with the team
- Any other reasonable tasks within the scope of this role
Your activities will include
- Designing methodology for and carrying out pilot lab studies with hydrocolloids and/or polymers
- Preparing samples for testing (equipment training will be provided)
- Conduct on-going testing and perform statistical analysis on physical properties to ensure product specifications are met
- Conducting routine chemical analysis by preparing samples and running tests in support of the technical team
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Carry out routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Presenting results in reports and presentations
- Exploring and researching iterations for the technology
- Collating existing research into literature reviews
- Running quality control checks on supplies, mid-process and finished product to meet precise tolerances
- Performing functional testing and recording results effectively
- Working with product team to troubleshoot any problems or issues
Work hours
Our normal work hours are 8 hours per day starting between 8-10am, although work hours are flexible and we're happy to work around your schedule
