Power Systems Protection Consultant

STATUS: Full time (37.5 hours per week), Permanent.
SALARY: Competitive and based on experience and qualifications.
LOCATION: Cape Town, with occasional travel to client offices and power plants. Permanent or temporary residency in South Africa, not linked to an existing employment contract, is a requirement.
Duties And Responsibilities Will Include
- Protection coordination and arc flash studies
- Other power system studies such as grid code compliance or grid impact studies
- Training and mentoring of employees
- Project management (financial and resource management)
- Maintaining relationships with existing clients and identifying and engaging new clients
REQUIREMENTS
Essential Requirements Include
- A Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent)
- Experience of network modelling and analysis in DIgSILENT PowerFactory (PSS/E, ETAP or other software packages will also be considered)
- Experience performing all modelling, simulations and calculations required to specify all protection settings (LV to HV) required in a typical renewable power plant (experience performing the same for synchronous generator plants, industrial/mining operations or complex transmission/distribution grids is considered an advantage)
- Experience with AC and DC arc flash studies/calculations
- Knowledge of the South African transmission and distribution systems and South African Grid Code and current industry developments
Desirable Requirements
- Postgraduate degree (Masters or higher) in engineering and registration (or working towards registration) with ECSA as a Professional Engineer
- Experience planning and project managing on site protection commissioning or maintenance testing, including preparation of method statements and documentation required for site safety files
- Experience with grid code compliance and/or grid impact studies for generation interconnections
- Experience performing any electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies (preferably using PSCAD)
- Experience performing earthing studies using CDEGS or XGSLab
THE POSITION
We are looking for a full-time consultant with experience in protection coordination and arc flash studies to join the TNEI Africa team to provide consulting services to the energy sector in South Africa and the rest of the African continent. You will need to be able to work fairly autonomously within a local team of around 10 engineers, with further support from the team based in the UK. TNEI offers the opportunity to work within an exciting and growing sector on a diverse range of technical, strategic and regulatory consultancy projects. TNEI employs consultants at Graduate, Technical, Senior, Principal and Specialist levels, and the candidate would be fitted to the most appropriate employment band based on their individual skills and experience.
