Job summary
The successful candidate will support the building and installation of experimental rigs and conduct day-to-day maintenance of the facilities at Qdot’s sites.
Your responsibilities
- Conduct day-to-day maintenance of the facilities, including for example 3D printers, pillar drill, workshop and compressed air line.
- Perform infrastructure and workplace improvements, for example extending compressed air lines, decorating and installing fencing.
- Organise the storage areas for parts and tools and maintain records of parts and tools.
- Provide installation support for experimental facilities, construct new facilities or modify pre-existing facilities.
- Provide technical support and advice to staff on the design of experimental facilities and advise on function, materials and feasibility based on experience.
- Select or design parts necessary to facilitate work, and then manufacture or source them to meet requirements of function, quality and accuracy.
- Select and install instrumentation on experimental facilities.
- Identify and rectify problems with experimental facilities.
- Help instruct colleagues in the safe use of machine and hand tools.
- Identify requirements for new equipment and communicate with Manager.
- Engage in a process of continuous learning and development and acquire new skills.
- Always work with due care and diligence according to the requirements of health and safety, quality and any other standards relevant to the task. Instruct others on the safe use of equipment, assist in completing risk assessments as required and adhere to these throughout the tasks.
- Record working time and tasks on timesheets and complete any other necessary administrative duties.
- Conduct work that may involve high pressure pipework and working at height.
- Conduct work at the primary location, Hangar 4, London Oxford Airport, and also at outdoors tests sites including Abingdon Airfield.
Selection criteria
Essential
- A formal qualification, such as HNC, BTEC, City and Guilds award or equivalent in an appropriate subject (e.g. mechanical engineering apprenticeship).
- 3+ years of experience in building maintenance and installation of experimental equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of the theory and application of safety regulations covering workshops and laboratories.
- Good IT skills e.g. for emails, record keeping, supplier searches.
- Experience installing high pressure pipework.
- Able to commute to and work at multiple sites.
Desirable
- Experience working in a R&D environment.
- Experience welding.
- Experience installing experimental instrumentation.
- Completed training to install Swagelok pipework.
- Completed training for working at heights.
- Completed training for working on pressurised gas systems.
