Role Overview
The HVDC Principal Engineer role will:
- Oversee and guide on a conceptual level ENOWA’s specification work for HVDC projects based on structured analysis of industry, HVDC technology providers’ and academic trends. The candidates with experience in HVDC converter station design, HVDC system design and control and protection systems will have preference.
- Participate in the development phase of the various projects with the aim to standardize ENOWA’s approach.
- Be responsible for the overall HVDC engineering of the HVDC converter system.
- Work closely with industry and the technology providers and ensure successful integration of VSC Converter Stations within ENOWA’s energy system, which will be 100% renewable power generation.
Requirements Summary
- Deep knowledge of HVDC systems, including design, specification, testing, installation, and maintenance. Experience with related technologies like FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) can also be beneficial.
- Project Management Skills: Proven ability to manage complex engineering projects from inception to completion.
ROLE COMPETENCIES & ACTIVITIES
The HVDC Principal Engineer's responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Conceptual definition, design, implementation and validation
- Providing technical expertise and leadership in the development and delivery of HVDC projects. This includes overseeing the design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance aspects of HVDC systems.
- Managing design aspects in HVDC projects from inception to completion ensuring they are in line with applicable standards, best industry practice and to the required quality standards. This involves coordinating with various stakeholders, including internal departments, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Assisting in the project development by providing technical input and ensuring that the Contractor’s proposals meet ENOWA’s requirements and industry standards.
- Staying updated with the latest advancements in HVDC technology and incorporating innovative solutions into projects. This also involves developing and updating technical specifications and guidance, and the engineering governance processes to standardize ENOWA’s approach towards HVDC projects.
- Working closely with ENOWA’s project team, Contractors and ENOWA’s engineering compliance department to ensure the successful delivery of projects. This includes mentoring junior engineers and fostering a collaborative working environment.
- Ensuring that all projects comply with relevant regulations and standards. This includes conducting risk assessments, implementing necessary safety measures, organizing and leading gate reviews, and participating in compliance reviews demonstrating technical due diligence within the HVDC projects.

Experience & Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- 7+ years of relevent experience
- HVDC projects and with at least 4 years of experience in control and protection.
- Experience at a strategic, functional and implementation level in HVDC projects covering all aspects of the HVDC converter systems.
- Knowledge of HVDC control and protection functions associated with VSC technology.
- Experience in factory system tests and commissioning
- Clear reporting and presentation skills.
- Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of HVDC systems, including design, specification, testing, installation, and maintenance. Experience with related technologies like FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) can also be beneficial.
- Project Management Skills: Proven ability to manage complex engineering projects from inception to completion.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements for HVDC systems..
- Soft Skills: Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills are essential for collaborating with clients, stakeholders, and team members.

- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or P.Eng. or working towards
