BuildZero is a 5-year, £6million project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK). It is developing a detailed vision of more sustainable building practices, specifically building without extracting new resources, eliminating waste and reducing carbon emissions from material extraction and production. The project will assess the extent to which the vision for a circular economy is achievable at regional and national level and will provide a platform for demonstrating these solutions at scale.
The Research Associate postholder will work closely with Dr. Kersty Hobson (School of Geography and Planning, Cardiff University) to deliver the project’s social science research. They will also be an integral member of the large, multidisciplinary BuildZero project team, and will contribute to wider project tasks, events, and outputs.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term until September 2028 and is immediately available.

Salary: £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description
Research
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative (e.g., Delhi Survey) primary and secondary, desktop research into key social and political issues in relation to current and future UK building stock. Contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences
- Utilise and develop effective research methodologies for data collection, including in-person and online participatory and deliberative methodologies.
- Carry out analysis of collected data
- Produce and deliver research outputs, including peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations and other formats (e.g., industry briefing papers).
- Undertake other tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of project tasks and implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
Other
- Work in close collaboration with other members of the BuildZero project team.
- Participate in, and present progress reports at, BZ team meetings and events.
- Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public project stakeholders to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications And Education
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area (e.g., human geography, planning, sociology) or equivalent professional experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of key the Circular Economy social and environmental sustainability debates and / or socio-political debates about building stocks and futures.
- Experience in successfully utilising participatory research methodologies (qualitative and/or quantitative) for data collection
- Proven ability to publish high quality research outputs e.g., peer-reviewed journal or conference papers
- Evidence of effective working with industrial and/or public stakeholders as part of a research project
Communication and Team Working
- Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
- Proven ability to work as part of a team
Other
- Proven ability to work without close supervision and take initiative, as appropriate
Desirable Criteria
- Ability to conduct research and/or communicate research findings in Welsh
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams
