Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to drive the energy project development policy workstream in the department’s Great British Energy Directorate. This position will play a key role in shaping the future business strategy and functions of Great British Energy.
Setting up Great British Energy is an exciting and high profile government priority project at the centre of the governments mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower. It is one of governments 'first steps for change' with the aim to boost energy independence, provide value for the the UK taxpayer and create jobs. It will be headquartered in Scotland, invest in clean energy across our country and make the UK a world leader in floating offshore wind, nuclear power, and hydrogen.
When it is set up, GBE will partner with local authorities, communities and other public sectors to deliver a variety of functions in order to meet its aims. The internal DESNZ team has been setup at pace to begin to create the new, publicly- owned energy company and is looking to expand.
This is a civil service role that is part of the Great British Energy Directorate within The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
Reporting to the Head of the energy project development and corporate finance team, this is an exciting, fast-paced role in an area of significant ministerial interest. It will provide opportunities to work directly with senior government and external stakeholders. It will require an individual with a strong background in renewable energy project development, an understanding of financing models, and the credibility to lead a team and engage at a senior level.

Key Responsibilities
- The post-holder will lead and shape the structure of Great British Energy’s (GBE) future business activity. This will include: developing the rationale, opportunities and business model for GBE business activity, collaborating with external stakeholders and ministers to shape this work in response to feedback and securing approval for this work with key stakeholders.
- Identify and resolve key potential policy and legal issues relating to potential GBE business activity and business lines.
- Work with stakeholders across the department to understand how GBE business activities will interface with existing policy issues and develop creative solutions to policy challenges.
- Lead interaction with other department teams and external stakeholders to shape GBE business activity to sector need.
- Ensure that the GBE governance model and organisational decisions reflects emerging business activity.
- Provide specialist input into the work of other GBE teams.
- Provide line management to a small team supporting this work.
Skills And Experience
We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate the following:
- Experience of leading renewable energy projects through the pre-development and development lifecycle in the UK, particularly wind and solar, with good associated practical knowledge of these processes.
- Good wider knowledge of the UK energy generation sector.
- Knowledge of different corporate financing structures (I.e. project finance, corporate equity raises).
- Experience in, or relevant background and ability to pick up, the financing products offered by existing UK Public Finance Institutions such as the UK Infrastructure Bank.
- Ability to develop collaborative relationships and communicate with internal/external stakeholders.
- People management skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK.
