About the Role:
Parallel Carbon is searching for an enthusiastic and experienced Electrochemical Engineer motivated to reverse climate change and help us scale our technology. You will lead the development and optimisation of the electrochemical component of our technology, working closely with the CTO. The ideal candidate will have expertise in electrochemical processes and characterisation, with a focus in water electrolysis, process scale-up and process automation and/or commercialisation. You will play a crucial role in accelerating technology development and Parallel Carbon's impact. The position is based in Manchester, UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development and optimisation of the electrochemical components of Parallel Carbon's technology, ensuring efficiency and scalability
- Design and build water electrolysers and stacks, testing different architectures, electrode materials and operational variables to maximise performance, with a focus on scale-up and commercialisation
- Drive the scale-up process of cell designs, moving from prototype to commercial-scale production
- Develop and implement process control strategies to optimise electrolyser operation and ensure consistent efficiency and quality
- Conduct experiments to validate process design and assess the performance using electrochemical characterisation techniques
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints
- Prepare technical reports, white papers, and presentations to communicate results and progress to the team and stakeholders
- Identify opportunities for innovation and process improvements, including from interviews and literature reviews, to continuously improve Parallel Carbon's technology. Investigate and analyse new materials, equipment, processes and engineering practices
- Develop an intellectual property management plan consistent with business strategy
- Establish and maintain relationships with key suppliers in the electrolyser supply chain. Evaluate and select suppliers, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality materials and components necessary for electrochemical processes
- Work with internal and external engineers to design and test processes related to the electrolyser including water treatment, gas treatment and management, etc
- Maintain the highest standards of safety through effective process design and proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials to prevent potential harm to employees and the environment
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including material scientists, process engineers, and other engineers to troubleshoot and resolve process issues
- Build and lead a team of engineers dedicated to the development and scale-up of electrochemical processes within Parallel Carbon's technology

Requirements

- Degree in Electrochemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in water electrolyser design, engineering, development, optimisation and scale up
- Advanced knowledge and experimental experience on electrode characterization, electro-catalysis, water electrolysis (HER and OER), and electrochemical energy technology development
- Proven track record in taking electrochemical technologies from the research phase to market, including an understanding of the commercial aspects of technology development
- Strong ability to analyse and solve complex technical problems related to process design, root cause analysis, and optimisation, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing technical challenges
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to present ideas, design specifications, and progress updates. Fluent in written and spoken English
- Strong project management abilities, with experience leading complex engineering projects, setting project goals, and ensuring project timelines and budgets are met
- Team player with an ability to work in fast paced and ambitious environment
